High school honors

The post-season accolades are rolling in for girls playing for the Allegro volleyball club following the 2007 high school season.

Leading the way was Angelika Kopacz, a senior from Rutherford, who plays for the Allegro 18-National team, along with players from the state-title winning Immaculate Heart high school team who joined Allegro this year. Kopacz and Andrea Nolan (18 National)of Immaculate Heart were named first-team All-State by the Star Ledger.

Kopacz, who led Rutherford to a 25-2 record, also was named the North Jersey player of the year by the Bergen Record, and was selected to the Star Ledger's All-Group II and All-Bergen teams.

"All the hard work at practice, playing year-round, paid off,'' said Angelika, who hopes to continue playing in college at either Rutgers University or Siena College. "Our high school team had a great year, we couldn't ask for more.''

Three Allegro 18-National players - Nolan, Michelle Sempkowski of East Brunswick, and Casey Larson of Livingston - were named player of the year for the county by the Star Ledger.

Larson, Ariel Scott (16-National) of Immaculate Heart, and Megan Knott (16 National) of Caldwell were named to the All-State Second Team by the Star Ledger, while Emily Carson (17-National) was named to the All-State Third Team.

Allegro practices started last week at PowerZone, so the girls are now putting the high school season behind them and concentrating on club.

"I'm really excited about club,'' Angelika said. "I think we're so much better than we were last year. Everyone's improved so much, and we're just going to keep on getting better. It's going to be a real good season.''

Scott Teske update

Once he was allowed to drive again, one of the first things Scott Teske did was make a stop at PowerZone.

Teske, a PowerZone regular - most members probably know him, since he has played on a men's club team, was a regular at open gyms, played in the men's and coed leagues, and coached in the Allegro local program - fractured one of his vertebrae during a trip to Greece last summer.

After returning to the U.S., Scott has been undergoing rehab at his parents home in Tabernacle. His doctor gave him permission to drive last weekend, and on Wednesday he was at PowerZone, catching up with old friends, and taking pictures of the coed playoffs.

"It's so great to be able to get out and get around,'' he said. "Hopefully, if things keep going well with rehab, I'll be allowed to play again soon. I'm hoping to be allowed to play again by summer, that's what I'm shooting for.''

Scott fractured the C1 vertebrae in three spots after diving into a shallow pool.

"I'm actually pretty lucky, 80-90 percent of the people who fracture that vertebrae end up with some paralysis, like Christopher Reeve,'' Scott said shortly after the accident. "I don't have any. I can eat, walk, go to the bathroom, and talk. I'm able to get around on my own.''

To allow the bone to heal, Scott had to wear a halo that was attached to his skull in four places, and also attached to a vest that he wore. He didn't need any outside apparatus during his visit on Wednesday.

Scott has been publishing a blog on the web detailing his recovery (http://www.sjtdesigns.com/wordpress/).

Touch It wins title

When there's only four players on the court, it helps to be flexible. Touch It's players showed their versatility on Wednesday as they won the Gold Division title in the Coed Fours Fall League, beating Ultra 25-16, 25-22 in the championship game.

The versatility showed in final five points of the second game, as the Touch It players went outside their normal roles to come back from a 22-20 deficit.

After a time out, Carrine Mackey (2 kills) used a sneaky set over on the second hit to make it 22-21 Ultra, and Anthony Calabria (9 kills in the match) went back to serve. Sean Mackey (7 kills, 2 blocks, 3 aces) set up in the middle front as blocker/setter. Lynnette Chen (6 kills) was on the left side, and Carrine was on the right.

An Ultra error tied the score. Then Carrine made a dig, and Sean set to Lynnette for a 23-22 lead. On the next play, Sean made the dig, so Carrine stepped up and set to Lynnette for the kill and a 24-22 lead. Lynnette again had the kill for the match-winning point, this time after a dig by Carrine and a set from Sean.

Touch It, which was the top seed in the playoffs, beat No. 4 Resistencia 25-17, 28-26 in the semifinals.

Alex Desau had 9 kills, Roman Stobnocki added 6, and Jeff Shirtz had 3 kills, a block and an ace for Ultra in the semifinals. Setter Edna Cetina had 2 aces for Ultra.

Ultra came back from 14-9 and 19-15 deficits to take the 22-20 lead in the second game. Versatility also proved to be a key component in their hot streaks. Edna had a dig and Roman set to Alex for a kill for their 12th point, and Alex had a dig and Roman registered a block in the rally that resulted in the 22nd point.

Ultra, the No. 6 seed, beat No. 7 AARP in the semifinals, 25-12, 25-23. Both those teams had earned upset victories over higher seeds in the quarterfinal round.

The Intellivision All-Stars (Jen Hollis, Jonathan Brooks, Jason Baum and Chris Webber) won the Silver Division title, beating Team Happy (Karen Nolan, Jen Parker, Ryan Less and Bryan Schaefer) 25-15, 22-25, 15-11 in the final.

BUCA won the Bronze Division title, beating Jumbled Up 25-23, 25-22 in the final.
Phil Oney had 10 kills, Jon Raser had 7, and Tony Weshefsky added 5 for BUCA, with Jen Peach doing the setting. Tory Thompson had 11 kills, Mike Gibbs added 10, and Pat Coleman had 3 kills and 2 aces for Jumbled Up, with Bria Lovelace setting.

The winter coed league will begin on January 9. Pickup/open gym nights, for players looking to join teams and for teams looking to add players, will be held Jan. 2 and Dec. 19.

Mens sixes match of the week

Beauty and the Beasts have made it clear they are the team to beat in the Men's Sixes League as the playoffs approach.

B&B (Chris Schuler, CJ Pinkney, Taras Borysyuk, Jarad Houston, Luis Martinez, Maribelle Viray and Cody Barry) finished the regular season with a 25-5 record, easily outdistancing their closest Gold Division competition, Ugly Ball (19-11) and the Pillsbury Rollers (17-13). They won the second-half standings with a 9-3 record, beating Ugly Ball (6-6) 2 games to 1 in the final match.

That means Camp Bell, which began the season in the Silver Division, finished tied for second in the Gold Division, also with a 6-6 record. Camp Bell (Mike Campbell, Eric Chen, John Titus, Ed Pyo, Ryan Kelly, Jim Findura and Roman Stobnicki), which has had a strong cast of substitutes, including Tom and Bill Narath in recent weeks, beat Ugly Ball 2 games to 1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-22) in their match on Tuesday. But Ugly Ball had beaten Camp Bell 3-0 earlier in the season, which gives them the tiebreaker for second place.

Beauty and the Beasts beat Ugly Ball 19-25, 25-17, 25-19, with Cody Barry leading the way with 17 kills. Jared Houston and Louis Martinez each had 9 kills, while Chris Schuler chipped in 5. Taras didn't play last week due to an injury.

Adam Lewis paced Ugly Ball with 10 kills, while Abe Ammary and Gregory Solovey each had 8. Adam also had 3 blocks, while Abe and Gregory each had 2. Greg Grande (4 kills) and Ilya Shchukin did the setting. Joe Saab (3 kills) and Rob Curran (4 kills) anchored the back-row defense.

The Pillsbury Rollers (Brad Kniewel, Dan Lattanzi, Robbie Widmer, Jay Sawicki, Glenn Soria and Dave Harvey) moved up to fourth place (5-7) by winning all three games - 25-20, 25-21, 25-23) against Warren Sixpak (4-8).

This week, the 10 teams in the league will play college-style matches (best 3 of 5 games to 30 points) against each other for playoff seeding positions.

B&B plays Ugly Ball, Camp Bell plays Pillsbury Rollers, and Sixpak plays the Warthogs, the top Silver Division team (11-1), who will now play in the Gold playoffs. Reminder from the league director: Teams can't use substitutes in the seeding matches or in the playoffs!

The Cheesesteaks (Fred Siegle, Andy Balint, Rich Amon, Eric Balint, Mark Kochan, Nick Serpico and Steven Gregory) had a strong finish to the regular season, winning all three games (25-19, 25-21, 25-18) agianst PZ to finish the second half with a 7-5 record. They'll play each other again in the seeding match.

The other silver seeding match will pit All the Kings Men against WML.

Men's league matches of the week

Ugly Ball and Camp Bell both had 2-1 victories over some of their main competition in the Gold Division of the Men's Sixes League on Tuesday night, keeping both in contention for top spots in the upcoming playoffs.

Ugly Ball beat the Pillsbury Rollers 25-19, 23-25, 15-11, with Adam Lewis leading the way with 10 kills. Bob Curran, Abe Ammary, and Gregory Solovey each had five kills, while Jack Henriques added four in the balanced attack. Setter Greg Grande spread the ball around to all his hitters, and Ilya Shchukin anchored the serve-receive and defense as libero.

Brad Kniewel led the Rollers with 12 kills, while Dan Lattanzi and Dave Harvey each had five. Glen Soria had three blocks.

Brad was the star of the 25-23 win when he went back to serve with his team losing 23-20 and served the next five points, including 3 aces.

All three games were 2-pointers (32-30, 25-23, 23-25) in Camp Bell's match with SixPak. Jim Findura and Tom Narath each had 12 kills to lead Camp Bell, while John Titus had 8 kills and Michael Campbell had four.

Jeff Wiedemann had 12 kills, Glen DeMagelhaus added 10, Tom Burke had 7, and Colin McNeill had 6 for SixPak.

Ugly Ball also won 3 games against PZ in an inter-divisional match, and is 4-2 in the division for this round. The Pillsbury Rollers also lost 3 games to Beauty and the Beasts and are struggling with a 2-7 record. Camp Bell also lost 3 to Beauty and the Beasts and is 4-5. Beauty is 6-0, while SixPak is 2-4.

Coed league division shifts

What Hurts (Roman and Angela Bulawski, Jennifer Duff and Rich and Paul Mehlin) and AARP (Terry Standfast, Tina Torbino, Mike Cohen and Sarah Chisholm) will be moving up to higher divisions after the completion of the first half of the Coed 4's schedule.

What Hurts went 6-0 in its games Wednesday and finished the first half with a 14-4 record in the Silver Division. Resistencia (Carla Barbatu, Junior Martins and Vinicius Costa) was the closest competition with an 11-7 record.

AARP went 5-1 on Wednesday and moves up from Bronze to Silver after compiling a 15-3 record. BUCA (Jen Peach, Jon Raser, Phil Oney, Mark Skeels and Tony Weshefsky) was second in the division with a 12-6 record.

Ultra moves from the Gold to Silver division, while Jumbled Up drops from Silver to Bronze.

In highlights from Wednesday's games:
Anthony Makoujy had 12 kills to lead Stu's Crew to 3 wins over the Flying Squirrels. Stu Nemiroff had 4 kills and 3 aces - including the game-winning point in the first game. Scott Shaw had 15 kills and AJ Prentice had 8 for the Flying Squirrels. Melissa Eckoff had two aces.

Roman Bulawski had 18 kills and Paul Mehlin 10 in What Hurts' three victories over Team 5. Roman also had six aces - three at the start of game 2 as What Hurts jumped out to a 10-4 lead, and three at the start of game 3 as they took an 8-5 lead. Jen Duff had two aces and did all the setting, as What Hurts played with only 3 players. Rich Mehlin arrived in time for their second match against Jumbled Up.

Chris Petitto had 9 kills, Alex Milov had 7, and Deneen Murawinski had 5 for Team 5.
Alex had 2 blocks during a 5-point scoring stretch in the second game as Team 5 closed from down 21-13 to 21-18. But after a time out, Roman, who was the back-row player at the time, ran a fake 1-ball that distracted Alex enough to prevent another block and What Hurts won the next point.

Jonathan Brooks and Jay Baum each had 12 kills off sets from Jen Hollis for the Intellivision All-Stars as they won 3 games against Team Happy. Bryan Schaefer had 8 kills and 3 blocks, Ryan Less had 3 kills and 6 blocks, Jennifer Parker had 5 kills and 2 aces, and Karen Nolan had 4 kills for Team Happy.

Blast from the past

Jay Riazanow, an original PowerZone member, moved to Florida in 1999. When he returned to New Jersey last week to visit his son, he also made sure to stop by and get back "in the Zone''.

Not surprising, since Raizanow, who lived in Rockaway before retiring to Florida, was one of the people most anxious to play when PowerZone was set to open.

"I was one of the first guys to play here,'' Riazanow said. "One of the last things that had to be done before it opened was putting the floor (Taraflex) in. I kept stopping in, checking to see when it would be done. It took a little time.''

Raizanow said he played in PowerZone as soon as one section of the floor was ready. "It was interesting, it was a little messy (the courts that weren't ready yet). I guess you'd call it rustic.''

Raizanow, who participated in the 1960 Olympics in Rome, Italy as a featherweight weightlifter for Isreal, subbed in the coed league for Stu's Crew on Wednesday night.

The Crew had its best showing of the season, going 4-2 in its 6 games. Raizanow was able to catch up with other long-time members like Paul and Rich Mehlin Phil Oney and Terry Standfast, who play in the league, along with Kathy Stanton, who's club team was practicing that night.

After next week's matches, the top Bronze team moves up into the Silver Division.

Mark had 5 kills, Jon had 3 kills, 2 blocks and 2 aces, Tony had 3 kills and an ace, and Jen had 2 kills and 2 aces. AJ and Mark each had 8 kills for the Flying Squirrels, with AJ also contributing 6 aces. Kat had 4 kills and Melissa had 2 kills and an ace. The Squirrels managed to combine their soccer experience with the volleyball skills, with numerous kick saves during the match, including one kick-over the net by Kat. The Flying Squirrels' players are all teachers at Morris County Science and Technology School, which is just down the road from PowerZone.

That sets up a first-place showdown between Touch It and Team Happy this Wednesday at 8:45.

In Touch It's victory over Ultra, Anthony and Dan each had 15 kills, while Sean had 7 kills, 3 blocks and 2 aces. Lynnette did the setting from back row and had 3 aces. She had two of the aces in the third game during the longest scoring stretch of the night, as she served points 8 through 15 in the third game for Touch It.

The match also exhibited the camaraderie involved in the league. On one point, Dan had a hit close to the line that the ref called in, but Dan said it was out. But that turned out not to have mattered, because Dave admitted he had touched the net on the play (not sure what the ref - Fred - was watching on that play.).

The second completely new team, Resistencia (Carla Barbatu, Junior Martins, and Vinicius Costa), arrived late and had to forfeit its first two games against What Hurts (Angela and Roman Bulawski, Jennifer Duff, and Rich and Paul Mehlin), then lost the third game, 25-23. In the second round, Resistencia beat Jumbled Up (Samantha Deckert, Bria Lovelace, Joe Cristofaro, Pat Coleman and Tory Thompson) 2 out of 3 (25-16, 30-28, 19-25) to start with a 2-4 record in the Silver Division.

In the other Silver matches, Jumbled Up won 2 of 3 from Team 5 (Laura Stoll, Deneen Murawinski, Chris Petitto, Alex Milov and Mike Brookes) and Team 5 beat What Hurts 2 of 3.

In the Bronze Division matches, BUCA (Jennifer Peach, Phil Oney, Tony Weshefsky, Jon Raser, and Mark Skeels) beat the Flying Squirrels (Melissa Eckoff, Kat McPhail, Mark Menadier, Scott Shaw and A.J. Prentice) 3-0; The Squirrels came back and took 2 of 3 from Stu's Crew (Stu Nemiroff, Juldy Larick, Anthony Makoujy, Kellye Pierre, and Bill Condon); AARP (Terry Standfast, Tina Toribio, Mike Cohen and Sarah Chisholm) went 5-1, winning all three against Stu's Crew and taking 2 of 3 from BUCA.

Sand Storm triumphs

Sand Storm (Chris Petitto, Sam Keller, Becky Smith and Ryan Hall) had the best record through the season, then held its seed in the playoffs, capturing the Coed 4's Beach League title on Aug. 27.

They beat CJ's team (CJ Pinkney, Sarah Chisholm, and Anthony Makoujy), 21-16, 21-17 in the final. Ryan's fifth kill of the night, a hard spike that hit the top of the net and trickled over, provided the game-winning point.

That play stopped CJ's team's late-game rally that put the victory in doubt. After Chris (7 kills) had a spike to make the score 20-14, CJ's team had a 3-point run - a kill by CJ (7 kills) and 2 aces by Sarah. She had 5 aces in the match.

Sam had 4 kills, at least 7 digs (stat keeper does not claim to record all digs!) and an ace, while Becky had 3 kills, at least 5 digs, and 2 aces. Chris had at least 3 digs and an ace, while Ryan contributed at least 2 digs and an ace.

Anthony had 4 kills, at least 6 digs, and 2 aces for CJ's team, while CJ also had at least 3 digs and an ace. Sarah had 2 kills and at least 3 digs to go with her 5 aces.

Sand Storm beat JLTT (Terry Standfast, Tina Toribio, Phil Oney and Dana Regan) in the semifinals, while CJ's team beat Stu's team (Stu Nemiroff, Ange Noonan, Kelly Curran and Bill Burns) in the other. The match between CJ's team and Stu's team went three games.

Grass Tournament results

Eric Chen saved his only ace for the end.

With partner Jewel Pierre-Roscelli cramping after diving to try to make a play, Eric went back and served an ace for the final point of their 15-13 victory over Bill and Betty Narath as they won the title in the reverse coed division in the Parsippany Grass Tournament at Volunteer Park on Aug. 12.

A team from St. Joseph's High School in Metuchen - Ed Rossiter, Kyle Ditmars, and Steve Brandenberg, won the Men's triples title, while Maggie Simon was the Queen of the court in a six-player women's division. Dana Regan was second and Heidi Errichetti was third in that competition.

There were 64 serves in the final (grass tournaments are played with sideout scoring) many of the points went on for long rallies, and Jewel cramped during the rally on the 62nd as Bill earned a kill (his 12th of the game) for a sideout, keeping the score at 14-13 in favor of Eric and Jewel. But a service error gave the ball back to Eric, who served his timely ace to end the game.

Each of the teams had earned their way into the playoffs after competing in pool play divisions that started at 9 a.m. Eric and Jewel and Bill and Betty were both in the same pool at the start of the day, with Eric and Jewel coming out on top in that matchup as well with 15-6, 15-10 wins.

Eric and Jewel reached the final by beating Ann-Lee Yuan and Scott Fitzpatrick, who had been second in the other pool, while Bill and Betty beat Jim Findura and Mascia Penha 16-14 in the other semifinal.

Eric had 11 kills in the final, while Jewel had 4 kills, a block, and 2 aces. Her second ace gave their team the 14-13 lead. Betty had 3 kills in the game, while Bill had 5 aces to go with his 12 kills.

Jim and Mascia had won their pool with a 6-0 record. Scott and Ann-Lee were second in that group with a 3-3 record.

Parsippany grass tournaments feature men's, women's, and coed play for all levels of competition. Men's and women's doubles divisions, along with girls (18-under and 16-under) quads divisions are played on Saturdays, while reverse coed doubles, and women's and men's triples divisions are held on Sundays at each event.

The next tournament will be held September 8-9. Hudson Valley volleyball also holds grass tournaments at Memorial Park in Beacon, N.Y. It has an event set for Sept. 15-16.

Reverse coed playoff results

The first game went into overtime and turned out to be the one that decided the Gold Division Championship.

$40 Bill and Poops McGee battled back and forth in Game 1, with $40 winning 29-27 as Kate Perkowski made a dig, Cecilie Pikus set Brad Kniewel a 10-ball, and Brad put it away for a kill for the deciding point. Poops won the second game, 25-15, before $40 won the championship with a 25-18 victory.

Brad led $40 with 23 kills and at least 4 digs (Stat keeper doesn't claim to get all digs!) and finished off the match with an ace for the final point in Game 3. Dan Lattanzi had 10 kills, 5 digs and an ace, while Kate chipped in 6 kills, 4 digs and a block. Cecilie also had a block and did all the setting.

Poops McGee actually had a 24-22 lead in the first game, but Brad had a kill and then CJ Pinkney had an error to tie the game at 24. Poops wasn't able to convert on two more game-point chances (kills by Dan and Brad) before $40 got its first game-point chance. But Dan's service error cut that one short.

Kate had the dig and Brad had the kill on $40's second game-point try.

CJ had 14 kills and 11 digs, while Taylor Dressing contributed 9 kills, 5 digs and an ace and Angelika Kopacz had 8 kills and 4 digs. Setter Kyle Pinkney had 5 digs.

A highlight of the match came in the third game when down-ref Andy Balint (Jonathan Brooks was the up-ref) woke up to make his first (and only) call of the match - a net violation against $40 that made the score 3-1.

Poops McGee also had a 3-game marathon in the semifinals, beating Touch It (Carrine and Sean Mackey and Marcus Haynes, they played without Heidi Brady who was away), 25-20, 23-25, 25-22. $40 beat Pip Squeeks (Eric Chen, Katie Schwartz, and Ruth Wong, Tom Narath was hurt), 25-17, 25-21 in the semis.

My Knee!(Angela and Roman Bulawski, Jim Findura, and Tulia Calcagnile) won the Silver Division title, beating Kee Yah (Taras Borysyuk, Dave Ross and Megan Hrbek, Kat Racibarskas was away) in the final, 25-22, 25-16.

My Knee! beat Speed Racer (Andre Kopacz, Colin McNeil, Kirsten Lechner and Jen Hollis ) by forfeit in the semis (Kirsten and Jen were both away). Kee Yah beat Smack Balls (Ely Polanco, Mascia Penha, Mark Gacki and Justin Beaumont)25-16, 25-23 in the semifinals.

Tall Blond Spears (Kathy and Kelly Spears, Christine Robbins, Scott Fitzpatrick and Jared Houston) won the Bronze Division, beating DHMTH (Terry Standfast, Mike Cohen, Dana Regan and Maria Hedbeck), 25-20, 19-25, 15-13 in the final. DHMTH beat the Ice Bags (Audrey Gross, Kristen O'Connell, Joe Cristafaro and Glen Soria), 23-25, 25-19, 15-9 in the semis, while Tall Blond Spears beat the Lancers (Max Sontag, Steve Tanzi, and Kim Marsh, Eliza Richardson was away), 25-20, 25-16.

Many of the players took part in a post-finals celebration at the Rattlesnake Cafe in Denville after the playoffs.

REVERSE COED - Gold Division match of the week

Captain Eric Chen arrived late because he had a coaching commitment. Tom Narath had an injured arm and wasn't able to hit with his normal velocity. Katie Schwartz was away on vacation.

But setter Ruth Wong was there, subs Jeff Wiedeman and Karen Nolan stepped in, and Eric arrived midway through the second game to let Tom sit out as the Pip Squeeks were able to beat $40 Bill 2 games to 1 on Thursday and help ensure they'd stay in the Gold Division for next week's playoffs in the Reverse Coed Fours league.

Jeff led the way with 9 kills, Karen contributed 8, and Tom and Eric each had 4 in a game and a-half each as the Pip Squeeks lost Game 1 25-21, but won 28-26 and 25-23 in the second and third games. They then won all three games against My Knee! to finish the final round of pool play before the playoffs with a 6-3 record.

Jeff had 14 digs, Karen contributed 6, Tom had 4 and Eric 3 in the match against $40 Bill.

Brad Kniewel had 14 kills, 5 aces, and 13 digs for $40, while Dan Lattanzi had 7 kills and 9 digs and Kate Perkowski contributed 4 kills, an ace and 5 digs. Cecelie Pikus was the setter and had 4 digs.

$40 rebounded from the 2-1 loss with a 2-1 victory over Poops McGee, and finished pool play with a 5-4 record. Brad had 14 kills, Dan had 6 and Kate contributed 4 kills and 2 aces in the 25-20, 24-26, 25-20 victory.

Taylor Dressing had 11 kills to lead Poops McGee, Angelika Kopacz had 8, and C.J. Pinkney contributed 7. Kyle Pinkney did the setting.

Poops McGee beat My Knee! (Roman and Angela Bulawski, Jim Findura, and Tulia Calcagnile) 25-19, 25-21, and 25-22 for a three-game sweep, and also finished the final pool 6-3.

The league playoffs will be held Wednesday Aug. 8, with Bronze Division and Silver Division semifinals at 7:45, followed by the finals for each division. The Gold Division semis will be at 8:45 with the final after.

A league party will be held after the finals at the Rattlesnake Cafe.

REVERSE COED - Silver Division Match of the Week

Touch It and Kee Yah both were 3-0 in the Silver Division pool's first round on July 25th, so when they met in the first match on Aug. 1, it was likely the winner would take the top spot in the division for this round - the final round before the playoffs.

Touch It (Carrine and Sean Mackey, Marcus Haynes and Heidi Brady) had dropped into the Silver from Gold the previous round. Kee Yah (Kat Racibarskas, Megan Hrbek, Dave Ross, Taras Borysyuk, and sub Chris Schuler)had moved up from the Bronze Division.

Now you can say its the Golden Touch as they won the match 2-1 to prevent Kee Yah from making a two-division jump (Bronze to Silver, Silver to Gold).

Touch It won the first two games, 25-19, 25-18, before Kee Yah won the third, 30-28. Carrine served up an ace for the final point in both of Touch It's victories.

Marcus led Touch It with 12 kills, while Heidi had 8, Carrine had 6 and Sean had 4. Carrine and Sean shared the setting duties. Sean also had 7 digs and Marcus had 6, and Carrine and Heidi combined for 5 blocks together.

Chris had 11 kills, Kat had 10, and Dave had 7 for Kee Yah, with Megan doing the setting. Dave had 10 digs along with 3 aces, and Megan had 6 digs and 2 aces.

Touch It went on to beat Smack Balls 3-0 to post an 8-1 record in the pool, while Kee Yah beat Tall Blonde Spears 3-0 and finished 7-2. Smack Balls (Ely Polanco, Mascia Penha, Mark Gacki and Justin Beaumont) beat Tall Blonde Spears (Kathy and Kelly Spears, Christine Robbins, Scott Fitzpatrick and Jared Houston)2-1 and finished the pool 2-7. Smack Balls won the deciding game in that match 26-24, as TBS finished 1-8.

In the Bronze Division, Speed Racer (Andree, Colin, Alexis and Kirsten) went 9-0 to win the final pool. DHMTH (Dana, Maria, Terry and Michael) went 5-4, The Ice Bags (Kristen, Audrey, Joe and Glen) were 3-6, and The Lancers (Eliza, Kim, Max and Steve) went 1-8.

Les and Cindy's new addition

There's a new PowerZone member on the horizon, as regulars Les and Cindy Sturt have a new addition to their family.

Duncan Leslie George Sturt was born on July 16, weighing in at 7 pounds, 15 ounces.

Les was playing in the Parsippany Grass Tournament on July 15, with Cindy spectating, when she felt it was time to head for the hospital. Les, who was playing in the reverse coed doubles with Ann-Lee Yuan, had to leave without playing their last pool play match that day, but Cindy's feelings were right since she spent the night in the hospital and gave birth the following morning.

Cindy said all three Sturts are doing well. "I came home two days later, and Les is home on paternity leave. My mom moved in today (Monday) to give us a break,'' Cindy said.

Cindy said they choose the name Duncan because "it's Scottish-sounding and unique. We debated it a lot because we aren't sure if he'll get bullied because of it, but we wanted something different.''

The first middle name came from Les' dad, and George is after Les' uncle. But he joked to PowerZone director George Mon that the baby was named after him because George was the last person he and Cindy saw at Volunteers Park before they left for the hospital.

Duncan Leslie George Sturt is 20 inches long, Cindy said. "He's a good size,'' she said. "We still haven't decided if my Asian genes or Les' Scottish genes won.''
Either way, he'll probably be a great volleyball player!

Pat Powers clinic takes over the 'Zone

For two days, PowerZone became Pat Powers-Zone.
Olympic Gold Medalist, USC men's coach, and former AVP star Pat Powers brought his unique coaching/teaching style to PowerZone on June 30 and July 1 for a sold-out two-day clinic with over 70 participants from all over the East Coast. One participant was from Japan, by way of his summer vacation in Vermont.

Powers, who was on the 1984 Olympic Gold Medal winning team from the United States and also played on the US World Championship team in 1986, has 35 clinics scheduled this year all over the United States.

Powers has developed a method that can teach players how to master the game of volleyball over a short two-day span. His "Over-Correction" method combined with "Survivor" games helps the junior and recreational player overcome years of bad habits.

"I teach skills a little different than most coaches: I advocate passing the ball low instead of high,'' Powers says on his website (vbclinics.com). "I am a big fan of snapping the ball instead of hitting it. Because of this, I have a successful teaching manner: theory, demonstration, "Over-Correction," drill, next skill.''
He said "Survivor'' helps players put all the skills together.

"The first part of the clinic is where we establish the rules and teach you how to play, the last part of each day is when we make you play by the rules…or you go to the end of the line. Very effective!'' Powers wrote on his website.

Powers plans to return to PowerZone with another camp next summer in late June/early July.

"PowerZone is one of the best facilities
that I see all year!'' he said. "I like the fact that we get a lot of
adults there. They keep the young players in line ... It's a very fun
event. I can't wait to return next year!''

Scott Teske's injury

Powerzone regular Scott Teske - most Powerzone members probably know him, since he plays on a men's club team, is a regular at open gyms, plays in the men's and coed leagues, and coaches in the Allegro local program - fractured one of his vertebrae during a trip to Greece.

Scott fractured the C1 vertebrae in three spots, and will be in rehab for the next six-to-nine months. He's at home with his parents in Tabernacle now.

"I'm actually pretty lucky, 80-90 percent of the people who fracture that vertebrae end up with some paralysis, like Christopher Reeve,'' Teske said. "I don't have any. I can eat, walk, go to the bathroom, and talk. I'm able to get around on my own.''

To allow the bone to heal, Scott has to wear a halo that is attached to his to his skull in four places, and also attaches to a vest that he wears.

"It's like a body cast, but it's pretty comfortable,'' he said. "I've been improving every day.''

Scott said he'd be very happy to hear from everyone via email (steske@earthlink.net). His address is 7 Moore Road West, Tabernacle, NJ, 08088. He's also publishing a blog on the web detailing his recovery (http://www.sjtdesigns.com/wordpress/).

"I'm going to be bored out of my mind for the next six months, so if anyone wanted to shoot me an email I'd be glad to hear from them,'' Scott said. "I appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers - I'm not the most religious person, but someone upstairs was obviously looking out for me.''

Parsippany grass tournament results

(For photos from the tournament, taken by Scott Teske, go to http://sjtdesigns.smugmug.com/invite/1310926744466dd26fd77fa4.55239122)

By Fred Siegle

LAKE HIAWATHA - It was the kind of comeback that's only possible in sideout scoring.

Joe Zdaniewicz, Freedon Twp., N.J., and Annie Holliday, Middletown, N.Y., trailed 7-0 and 10-2 but came back and won, 15-11 to capture the reverse coed title at the Parsippany Grass Tournament at Volunteers Park on June 10. They beat Tom Narath, Boonton, and Macia Penha, Maywood, in the championship game.

"It was terrific volleyball,'' said Zdaniewicz, 22, who recently graduated from West Point and will start his Army career in two months as a lieutenant. "This was my first grass tournament ever, I'm so happy to come out first, especially since it was such good competition throughout the day.''

Zdaniewicz had 3 aces and 7 kills in the final, while Holliday, 26, who is the coach of the West Point club volleyball team, had 10 kills and 2 aces.

They went undefeated throughout the day, compiling a 6-0 record in pool play, then beating Tracy Reasoner, Flemington, and Rafael Innis, Plainsboro in the semifinals. Narath and Penha came out first in their pool, then beat Cheryl Vadas and Michael Campbell in the semifinals.

Narath had two aces at the start of the final and his tough serve helped his team take the 7-0 lead. "He was serving so well,'' Zdaniewicz said.

After Narath's third ace, which landed in the back right-side corner, he and Penha had a 10-2 lead. But Zdaniewicz had two straight aces after that to start the comeback. A dig and a kill by Zdaniewicz made it 10-5, and his third ace made the score 10-6. "You're carrying me,'' Holliday said to him after the point.

An error by Zdaniewicz made the score 11-6, but Narath and Penha weren't able to score again (Narath had to take a time out at one point because of a cramp in his foot). Zdaniewicz completed the comeback with a dig and kill after a serve by Holliday.

In sideout scoring, teams can only earn points by being successful in a rally that started with their serve. If the game had been played under the rally scoring format - which is used in almost all volleyball except grass tournaments and where there is a point scored on every serve - Narath and Penha would have held on for a 25-23 victory.

"That shows the beauty of sideout scoring,'' Holliday said.

Narath finished the game with 3 aces and 7 kills, while Penha had 6 kills and an ace.

The next tournament will be held July 14-15, with events also scheduled for August 11-12 and September 8-9. Hudson Valley volleyball also holds grass tournaments at Memorial Park in Beacon, N.Y. It has events set for July 7-8, Aug. 4-5, and Sept. 15-16.

Coed match of the week (Watermelons win 2 of 3 from Shenanigans)

Shenanigans had been cruising along with a 17-1 record, while the Watermelons were 6-12 heading into the match.

But Watermelons came away with two wins in the three games (25-23, 19-25, 26-24).

Eric had 19 kills, 2 blocks, and 3 aces in the match (including 10 kills in Game 3). Kurt chipped in 12 kills, 4 blocks and an ace (9 kills in Game 3). Marci had one kill, but it was an important one in Game 1, and also had many digs and passed well in serve receive. Megan did the majority of the setting and had 3 aces.

The final point of Game 3 came on a set over into the corner by Eric.

For Shenanigans, Roman had 15 kills, 4 blocks and 2 aces, James had 7 kills and a ton of digs, and Michael had 7 kills, 2 blocks and an ace. Cheryl set and had 4 kills, including the 24th point in Game 3 that kept her team's hopes alive off a set by Michael.

Shenanigans rebounded with a 3-0 win over Ultra, all close games (25-21, 25-23, 25-23) and is now 21-3.

Watermelons also won all three of their games against the Scoopers (33-31, 25-17, 25-9) and is now 11-13.

I'll try to do a match (or two) of the week every week.

Men's league schedule changes

I've made some revisions to the men's 4's schedule
to reflect the problems (Nutley can't play 6:45,
makeups for Miller and Stanford Place).
The changes for this week (april 9): Zhou plays at
6:45, 7:45 and 8:45 (the makeup with Miller);
Smackey switches to 7:45 and 8:45; Nutley switches
to 7:45 and 8:45.
I sent out an email with the old schedule, get rid of the old
one! If you didn't get it, send me an email and I'll attach it. (fsiegle@powerzonevb.com.
Please be a little early Monday so you can pay
league fees (those that aren't gold or haven't
already).

Men's league standings/news

Here's the Men's 4's standings after the first week:

GOLD DIVISION: Scott Teske 6-0; Smackey, Ugly Ball and Ringwoodies all 4-2, Stanford Place 0-6 (but with possible makeups).

SILVER DIVISION: Western Penn 5-1, Zhou 1-2, Storms 0-3, Nutley 0-6, Miller Time 0-0 (six makeups needed).

Some notes: All six of Scott Teske's team's games were against Silver Division teams. Zhou's win over Western Penn was by a 27-25 score. Ringwoodies were missing Brad and CJ. Ugly Ball only had three players, Bob, Ilya and Gary. They lost the third game to Smackey, 25-21.

Upcoming: Please note on your schedules: any match against Nutley that starts at 6:45 will be moved to 8:45 throughout the schedule. They can't make it here by that time, and we have the space at 8:45 anyway.

I'll be figuring out the makeups for Stanford Place and Miller Time this week and will send out a new schedule with them and the adjustments for Nutley.
