Sand Storm triumphs

Sand Storm (Chris Petitto, Sam Keller, Becky Smith and Ryan Hall) had the best record through the season, then held its seed in the playoffs, capturing the Coed 4's Beach League title on Aug. 27.

They beat CJ's team (CJ Pinkney, Sarah Chisholm, and Anthony Makoujy), 21-16, 21-17 in the final. Ryan's fifth kill of the night, a hard spike that hit the top of the net and trickled over, provided the game-winning point.

That play stopped CJ's team's late-game rally that put the victory in doubt. After Chris (7 kills) had a spike to make the score 20-14, CJ's team had a 3-point run - a kill by CJ (7 kills) and 2 aces by Sarah. She had 5 aces in the match.

Sam had 4 kills, at least 7 digs (stat keeper does not claim to record all digs!) and an ace, while Becky had 3 kills, at least 5 digs, and 2 aces. Chris had at least 3 digs and an ace, while Ryan contributed at least 2 digs and an ace.

Anthony had 4 kills, at least 6 digs, and 2 aces for CJ's team, while CJ also had at least 3 digs and an ace. Sarah had 2 kills and at least 3 digs to go with her 5 aces.

Sand Storm beat JLTT (Terry Standfast, Tina Toribio, Phil Oney and Dana Regan) in the semifinals, while CJ's team beat Stu's team (Stu Nemiroff, Ange Noonan, Kelly Curran and Bill Burns) in the other. The match between CJ's team and Stu's team went three games.

Grass Tournament results

Eric Chen saved his only ace for the end.

With partner Jewel Pierre-Roscelli cramping after diving to try to make a play, Eric went back and served an ace for the final point of their 15-13 victory over Bill and Betty Narath as they won the title in the reverse coed division in the Parsippany Grass Tournament at Volunteer Park on Aug. 12.

A team from St. Joseph's High School in Metuchen - Ed Rossiter, Kyle Ditmars, and Steve Brandenberg, won the Men's triples title, while Maggie Simon was the Queen of the court in a six-player women's division. Dana Regan was second and Heidi Errichetti was third in that competition.

There were 64 serves in the final (grass tournaments are played with sideout scoring) many of the points went on for long rallies, and Jewel cramped during the rally on the 62nd as Bill earned a kill (his 12th of the game) for a sideout, keeping the score at 14-13 in favor of Eric and Jewel. But a service error gave the ball back to Eric, who served his timely ace to end the game.

Each of the teams had earned their way into the playoffs after competing in pool play divisions that started at 9 a.m. Eric and Jewel and Bill and Betty were both in the same pool at the start of the day, with Eric and Jewel coming out on top in that matchup as well with 15-6, 15-10 wins.

Eric and Jewel reached the final by beating Ann-Lee Yuan and Scott Fitzpatrick, who had been second in the other pool, while Bill and Betty beat Jim Findura and Mascia Penha 16-14 in the other semifinal.

Eric had 11 kills in the final, while Jewel had 4 kills, a block, and 2 aces. Her second ace gave their team the 14-13 lead. Betty had 3 kills in the game, while Bill had 5 aces to go with his 12 kills.

Jim and Mascia had won their pool with a 6-0 record. Scott and Ann-Lee were second in that group with a 3-3 record.

Parsippany grass tournaments feature men's, women's, and coed play for all levels of competition. Men's and women's doubles divisions, along with girls (18-under and 16-under) quads divisions are played on Saturdays, while reverse coed doubles, and women's and men's triples divisions are held on Sundays at each event.

The next tournament will be held September 8-9. Hudson Valley volleyball also holds grass tournaments at Memorial Park in Beacon, N.Y. It has an event set for Sept. 15-16.

Reverse coed playoff results

The first game went into overtime and turned out to be the one that decided the Gold Division Championship.

$40 Bill and Poops McGee battled back and forth in Game 1, with $40 winning 29-27 as Kate Perkowski made a dig, Cecilie Pikus set Brad Kniewel a 10-ball, and Brad put it away for a kill for the deciding point. Poops won the second game, 25-15, before $40 won the championship with a 25-18 victory.

Brad led $40 with 23 kills and at least 4 digs (Stat keeper doesn't claim to get all digs!) and finished off the match with an ace for the final point in Game 3. Dan Lattanzi had 10 kills, 5 digs and an ace, while Kate chipped in 6 kills, 4 digs and a block. Cecilie also had a block and did all the setting.

Poops McGee actually had a 24-22 lead in the first game, but Brad had a kill and then CJ Pinkney had an error to tie the game at 24. Poops wasn't able to convert on two more game-point chances (kills by Dan and Brad) before $40 got its first game-point chance. But Dan's service error cut that one short.

Kate had the dig and Brad had the kill on $40's second game-point try.

CJ had 14 kills and 11 digs, while Taylor Dressing contributed 9 kills, 5 digs and an ace and Angelika Kopacz had 8 kills and 4 digs. Setter Kyle Pinkney had 5 digs.

A highlight of the match came in the third game when down-ref Andy Balint (Jonathan Brooks was the up-ref) woke up to make his first (and only) call of the match - a net violation against $40 that made the score 3-1.

Poops McGee also had a 3-game marathon in the semifinals, beating Touch It (Carrine and Sean Mackey and Marcus Haynes, they played without Heidi Brady who was away), 25-20, 23-25, 25-22. $40 beat Pip Squeeks (Eric Chen, Katie Schwartz, and Ruth Wong, Tom Narath was hurt), 25-17, 25-21 in the semis.

Tall Blond Spears (Kathy and Kelly Spears, Christine Robbins, Scott Fitzpatrick and Jared Houston) won the Bronze Division, beating DHMTH (Terry Standfast, Mike Cohen, Dana Regan and Maria Hedbeck), 25-20, 19-25, 15-13 in the final. DHMTH beat the Ice Bags (Audrey Gross, Kristen O'Connell, Joe Cristafaro and Glen Soria), 23-25, 25-19, 15-9 in the semis, while Tall Blond Spears beat the Lancers (Max Sontag, Steve Tanzi, and Kim Marsh, Eliza Richardson was away), 25-20, 25-16.

Many of the players took part in a post-finals celebration at the Rattlesnake Cafe in Denville after the playoffs.

REVERSE COED - Gold Division match of the week

Captain Eric Chen arrived late because he had a coaching commitment. Tom Narath had an injured arm and wasn't able to hit with his normal velocity. Katie Schwartz was away on vacation.

But setter Ruth Wong was there, subs Jeff Wiedeman and Karen Nolan stepped in, and Eric arrived midway through the second game to let Tom sit out as the Pip Squeeks were able to beat $40 Bill 2 games to 1 on Thursday and help ensure they'd stay in the Gold Division for next week's playoffs in the Reverse Coed Fours league.

Jeff led the way with 9 kills, Karen contributed 8, and Tom and Eric each had 4 in a game and a-half each as the Pip Squeeks lost Game 1 25-21, but won 28-26 and 25-23 in the second and third games. They then won all three games against My Knee! to finish the final round of pool play before the playoffs with a 6-3 record.

Jeff had 14 digs, Karen contributed 6, Tom had 4 and Eric 3 in the match against $40 Bill.

Brad Kniewel had 14 kills, 5 aces, and 13 digs for $40, while Dan Lattanzi had 7 kills and 9 digs and Kate Perkowski contributed 4 kills, an ace and 5 digs. Cecelie Pikus was the setter and had 4 digs.

$40 rebounded from the 2-1 loss with a 2-1 victory over Poops McGee, and finished pool play with a 5-4 record. Brad had 14 kills, Dan had 6 and Kate contributed 4 kills and 2 aces in the 25-20, 24-26, 25-20 victory.

Taylor Dressing had 11 kills to lead Poops McGee, Angelika Kopacz had 8, and C.J. Pinkney contributed 7. Kyle Pinkney did the setting.

Poops McGee beat My Knee! (Roman and Angela Bulawski, Jim Findura, and Tulia Calcagnile) 25-19, 25-21, and 25-22 for a three-game sweep, and also finished the final pool 6-3.

The league playoffs will be held Wednesday Aug. 8, with Bronze Division and Silver Division semifinals at 7:45, followed by the finals for each division. The Gold Division semis will be at 8:45 with the final after.

A league party will be held after the finals at the Rattlesnake Cafe.

REVERSE COED - Silver Division Match of the Week

Touch It and Kee Yah both were 3-0 in the Silver Division pool's first round on July 25th, so when they met in the first match on Aug. 1, it was likely the winner would take the top spot in the division for this round - the final round before the playoffs.

Touch It (Carrine and Sean Mackey, Marcus Haynes and Heidi Brady) had dropped into the Silver from Gold the previous round. Kee Yah (Kat Racibarskas, Megan Hrbek, Dave Ross, Taras Borysyuk, and sub Chris Schuler)had moved up from the Bronze Division.

Now you can say its the Golden Touch as they won the match 2-1 to prevent Kee Yah from making a two-division jump (Bronze to Silver, Silver to Gold).

Touch It won the first two games, 25-19, 25-18, before Kee Yah won the third, 30-28. Carrine served up an ace for the final point in both of Touch It's victories.

Marcus led Touch It with 12 kills, while Heidi had 8, Carrine had 6 and Sean had 4. Carrine and Sean shared the setting duties. Sean also had 7 digs and Marcus had 6, and Carrine and Heidi combined for 5 blocks together.

Chris had 11 kills, Kat had 10, and Dave had 7 for Kee Yah, with Megan doing the setting. Dave had 10 digs along with 3 aces, and Megan had 6 digs and 2 aces.

Touch It went on to beat Smack Balls 3-0 to post an 8-1 record in the pool, while Kee Yah beat Tall Blonde Spears 3-0 and finished 7-2. Smack Balls (Ely Polanco, Mascia Penha, Mark Gacki and Justin Beaumont) beat Tall Blonde Spears (Kathy and Kelly Spears, Christine Robbins, Scott Fitzpatrick and Jared Houston)2-1 and finished the pool 2-7. Smack Balls won the deciding game in that match 26-24, as TBS finished 1-8.

In the Bronze Division, Speed Racer (Andree, Colin, Alexis and Kirsten) went 9-0 to win the final pool. DHMTH (Dana, Maria, Terry and Michael) went 5-4, The Ice Bags (Kristen, Audrey, Joe and Glen) were 3-6, and The Lancers (Eliza, Kim, Max and Steve) went 1-8.
