TriPod wins Silver title

Three of the four games went overtime, and the fourth was decided by 3 points.

That's how close the competition was as Tripod outlasted Ultra for the Silver Division title in the Spring Coed Fours League on May 28. Tripod - Anthony Calabria, Monica Calabria, Matt Susko, Kelly Mejuisi, and Adam Reinhardt - won 29-27, 28-30, 26-24, 25-22 to win the crown.

Tripod actually trailed 7-2 in two of the games they won, the first and third, but was able to battle back each time. In the first game, they finally took a 14-13 lead on an ace by Kelly, and actually went up 17-14 after two straight blocks by Anthony.

But then it was Ultra's turn to rally, and they went up 22-20 on two straight Tripod errors. After they went back and forth for a while, Matt finally ended the game with a kill on a hit on the second ball after a dig by Kelly.

In Game 2, it was Tripod that went up big, before Ultra battled back. An Ultra error made it 10-3, but a kill by Bill Burns, a block by Bill, and a Tripod error evened the score at 13-13. Tripod led 28-27, but 3 straight kills by Alex Desau gave Ultra the victory.

Ultra had two game points, 24-22, after a kill by Alex in Game 3, but Matt had a kill, Kelly had an ace, Anthony had a kill, and Kelly finished the game with another ace.

Alex's final kill of the night, his 25th, made the score 23-22 in the fourth game, and that one looked like it was headed for extra time, too. But Matt had a kill for the 24th point, then hit on 2 again in a similar play to the one that ended Game 1 to finish the game and match.

Anthony finished with 29 kills, 5 blocks and an ace for TriPod, while Matt had 28 kills, a block, 3 aces, and at least 3 digs (stat man can't keep up with all the digs!) Monica had 4 aces and at least 4 digs, while Kelly had 4 aces and at least 5 digs. Monica and Kelly combined for 6 aces in TriPod's Game 3 win. Adam had 7 kills and an ace.

Alex finished with 3 aces to go with his 25 kills for Ultra, while Bill Burns had 27 kills, 4 blocks, and at least 3 digs. Jeff Shirtz had 6 kills. Edna Cetina did the setting for Ultra.

Touch It! Smackey won the Gold Division of the league, while BUCA won the bronze in matches played the week before. The Silver Division needed an extra week because it was an 8-team grouping while the others each had 4 teams.

The Summer Reverse Coed League will be played on Thursday nights this year, starting June 12.
