Retreads win Spring Mens Sixes title

Fred's Retreads are on a 2-league winning streak.

The Retreads, composed of former and current Warren Sixpak junior players, captured the Spring Mens Sixes championship on June 10, beating Team Beer 30-28, 23-25, 25-22, 25-21 in the best-of-five final.

Ziggy Goryn, who completed his junior playing career in 2002, led the Retreads with 25 kills, at least 7 digs (statman does not claim to note all digs!) 2 blocks and an ace. Mark Kochan, a current player on Warren's 16-under team, added 13 kills, at least 3 digs, and 2 blocks.

Goryn had the Retreads' final three kills in the key third-game victory. He had 9 kills in that game.
In the hotly contested first game, Beer jumped out to a 9-4 lead on a kill by Scott Fitzpatrick and also led 10-5 on a kill by Glen Soria, 20-15 when setter Sean Mackey hit on 2 off a dig by Chuck Roy, and 21-16 on a kill by Dan Botzan. But 2 straight kills by Goryn, the second after a dig by Taras Borysyuk, made it 21-18.
Rob Curran had a kill for Beer as they took a 22-18 led, but a kill by Goryn, an ace by Mark Gacki, and another kill by Goryn after another dig by Borysyuk made it a 1-point game.

After each team had several game-point chances, the Retreads finally took a 29-28 lead on a kill by Justin Beaumont and won on an error by Beer.

Curran led the way in Beer's game-two win, with 5 of his team-high 15 kills. That game ended on a Retread error followed by a kill by Botzan (12 kills, at least 4 digs overall), for the 25-23 Beer victory.
But Goryn took over in Game 3, and Borysyuk, who completed his Warren playing career in 2000, ended Game 4 with his 7th kill of the night.

Borysyuk also had a block and at least 6 digs while setting in a 6-2 format with Mark Gacki, the setter for this year's Warren 18s. Gacki finished with 7 kills, a block, a game-high 4 aces, and at least 3 digs.

Chris Schuler, who also finished his junior career in 2002, contributed 9 kills, 2 blocks, an ace, and at least 3 digs to the Retread effort, while Beaumont, who played for Warren's 2007 18's team, had 9 kills, 3 blocks, and at least 5 digs.

Mackey finished with 2 kills, 3 blocks, an ace, and at least 3 digs for Beer, while Curren also contributed an ace and at least 4 digs to go with his 15 kills. Fitzpatrick contributed 8 kills, 2 blocks and at least 3 digs for Beer, which won the regular-season title in the league.

Roy had 7 kills, 2 blocks, an ace, and at least 4 digs, and Soria had 5 kills, 3 blocks, and at least 3 digs for Beer.

The Retreads had also won the Winter Mens Sixes League title, beating Ugly Ball in the final.
