Team Happy (Karen Nolan,Ryan Leff, Bryan Schaefer and Stephanie Traviola), one of the completely new teams in the Coed Fours League, got off to a great start on Sept. 26.
Team Happy went 6-0 in its debut, beating perennial Gold Division contenders Ultra and the Intellivision All-Stars.
Team Happy beat Ultra (Edna Cetina, Jeff Shirtz, Alex Dessau and sub "Super'' Dave Schulte, who arrived late as a fill-in for Glen Soria), 25-16, 25-20, 15-9 in their opening match, then beat the All-Stars (Jenifer Hollis, Chris Weber, and Jason Baum - Jonathon Brooks wasn't able to play on opening night) 25-18, 25-11, 25-18.
In the victory over Ultra, Stephanie had 9 kills and 3 aces, Bryan had 10 kills, a block and 2 aces, Karen had 8 kills, and Ryan contributed 5 kills, 3 blocks and 3 aces while sharing the setting duties with Bryan.
Ultra was led by Alex with 14 kills, a block and an ace, while Jeff had 5 kills and an ace. Edna did the setting.
The fourth Gold Division team, Touch It (Lynnette Chen, Sean Mackey, Anthony Calabria, and Dan Botzan, subbing for Carrine Mackey) also went 6-0, beating the All-Stars 25-13, 25-15, 15-13, and Ultra 25-19, 25-18, 25-10.
That sets up a first-place showdown between Touch It and Team Happy this Wednesday at 8:45.
In Touch It's victory over Ultra, Anthony and Dan each had 15 kills, while Sean had 7 kills, 3 blocks and 2 aces. Lynnette did the setting from back row and had 3 aces. She had two of the aces in the third game during the longest scoring stretch of the night, as she served points 8 through 15 in the third game for Touch It.
The match also exhibited the camaraderie involved in the league. On one point, Dan had a hit close to the line that the ref called in, but Dan said it was out. But that turned out not to have mattered, because Dave admitted he had touched the net on the play (not sure what the ref - Fred - was watching on that play.).
The second completely new team, Resistencia (Carla Barbatu, Junior Martins, and Vinicius Costa), arrived late and had to forfeit its first two games against What Hurts (Angela and Roman Bulawski, Jennifer Duff, and Rich and Paul Mehlin), then lost the third game, 25-23. In the second round, Resistencia beat Jumbled Up (Samantha Deckert, Bria Lovelace, Joe Cristofaro, Pat Coleman and Tory Thompson) 2 out of 3 (25-16, 30-28, 19-25) to start with a 2-4 record in the Silver Division.
In the other Silver matches, Jumbled Up won 2 of 3 from Team 5 (Laura Stoll, Deneen Murawinski, Chris Petitto, Alex Milov and Mike Brookes) and Team 5 beat What Hurts 2 of 3.
In the Bronze Division matches, BUCA (Jennifer Peach, Phil Oney, Tony Weshefsky, Jon Raser, and Mark Skeels) beat the Flying Squirrels (Melissa Eckoff, Kat McPhail, Mark Menadier, Scott Shaw and A.J. Prentice) 3-0; The Squirrels came back and took 2 of 3 from Stu's Crew (Stu Nemiroff, Juldy Larick, Anthony Makoujy, Kellye Pierre, and Bill Condon); AARP (Terry Standfast, Tina Toribio, Mike Cohen and Sarah Chisholm) went 5-1, winning all three against Stu's Crew and taking 2 of 3 from BUCA.

Grass Tournament results
Eric Chen saved his only ace for the end.
With partner Jewel Pierre-Roscelli cramping after diving to try to make a play, Eric went back and served an ace for the final point of their 15-13 victory over Bill and Betty Narath as they won the title in the reverse coed division in the Parsippany Grass Tournament at Volunteer Park on Aug. 12.
A team from St. Joseph's High School in Metuchen - Ed Rossiter, Kyle Ditmars, and Steve Brandenberg, won the Men's triples title, while Maggie Simon was the Queen of the court in a six-player women's division. Dana Regan was second and Heidi Errichetti was third in that competition.
There were 64 serves in the final (grass tournaments are played with sideout scoring) many of the points went on for long rallies, and Jewel cramped during the rally on the 62nd as Bill earned a kill (his 12th of the game) for a sideout, keeping the score at 14-13 in favor of Eric and Jewel. But a service error gave the ball back to Eric, who served his timely ace to end the game.
Each of the teams had earned their way into the playoffs after competing in pool play divisions that started at 9 a.m. Eric and Jewel and Bill and Betty were both in the same pool at the start of the day, with Eric and Jewel coming out on top in that matchup as well with 15-6, 15-10 wins.
Eric and Jewel reached the final by beating Ann-Lee Yuan and Scott Fitzpatrick, who had been second in the other pool, while Bill and Betty beat Jim Findura and Mascia Penha 16-14 in the other semifinal.
Eric had 11 kills in the final, while Jewel had 4 kills, a block, and 2 aces. Her second ace gave their team the 14-13 lead. Betty had 3 kills in the game, while Bill had 5 aces to go with his 12 kills.
Jim and Mascia had won their pool with a 6-0 record. Scott and Ann-Lee were second in that group with a 3-3 record.
Parsippany grass tournaments feature men's, women's, and coed play for all levels of competition. Men's and women's doubles divisions, along with girls (18-under and 16-under) quads divisions are played on Saturdays, while reverse coed doubles, and women's and men's triples divisions are held on Sundays at each event.
The next tournament will be held September 8-9. Hudson Valley volleyball also holds grass tournaments at Memorial Park in Beacon, N.Y. It has an event set for Sept. 15-16.

Reverse coed playoff results
The first game went into overtime and turned out to be the one that decided the Gold Division Championship.
$40 Bill and Poops McGee battled back and forth in Game 1, with $40 winning 29-27 as Kate Perkowski made a dig, Cecilie Pikus set Brad Kniewel a 10-ball, and Brad put it away for a kill for the deciding point. Poops won the second game, 25-15, before $40 won the championship with a 25-18 victory.
Brad led $40 with 23 kills and at least 4 digs (Stat keeper doesn't claim to get all digs!) and finished off the match with an ace for the final point in Game 3. Dan Lattanzi had 10 kills, 5 digs and an ace, while Kate chipped in 6 kills, 4 digs and a block. Cecilie also had a block and did all the setting.
Poops McGee actually had a 24-22 lead in the first game, but Brad had a kill and then CJ Pinkney had an error to tie the game at 24. Poops wasn't able to convert on two more game-point chances (kills by Dan and Brad) before $40 got its first game-point chance. But Dan's service error cut that one short.

CJ had 14 kills and 11 digs, while Taylor Dressing contributed 9 kills, 5 digs and an ace and Angelika Kopacz had 8 kills and 4 digs. Setter Kyle Pinkney had 5 digs.

Poops McGee also had a 3-game marathon in the semifinals, beating Touch It (Carrine and Sean Mackey and Marcus Haynes, they played without Heidi Brady who was away), 25-20, 23-25, 25-22. $40 beat Pip Squeeks (Eric Chen, Katie Schwartz, and Ruth Wong, Tom Narath was hurt), 25-17, 25-21 in the semis.

REVERSE COED - Gold Division match of the week
Captain Eric Chen arrived late because he had a coaching commitment. Tom Narath had an injured arm and wasn't able to hit with his normal velocity. Katie Schwartz was away on vacation.
But setter Ruth Wong was there, subs Jeff Wiedeman and Karen Nolan stepped in, and Eric arrived midway through the second game to let Tom sit out as the Pip Squeeks were able to beat $40 Bill 2 games to 1 on Thursday and help ensure they'd stay in the Gold Division for next week's playoffs in the Reverse Coed Fours league.
Jeff led the way with 9 kills, Karen contributed 8, and Tom and Eric each had 4 in a game and a-half each as the Pip Squeeks lost Game 1 25-21, but won 28-26 and 25-23 in the second and third games. They then won all three games against My Knee! to finish the final round of pool play before the playoffs with a 6-3 record.

REVERSE COED - Silver Division Match of the Week
Touch It and Kee Yah both were 3-0 in the Silver Division pool's first round on July 25th, so when they met in the first match on Aug. 1, it was likely the winner would take the top spot in the division for this round - the final round before the playoffs.
Touch It (Carrine and Sean Mackey, Marcus Haynes and Heidi Brady) had dropped into the Silver from Gold the previous round. Kee Yah (Kat Racibarskas, Megan Hrbek, Dave Ross, Taras Borysyuk, and sub Chris Schuler)had moved up from the Bronze Division.
Now you can say its the Golden Touch as they won the match 2-1 to prevent Kee Yah from making a two-division jump (Bronze to Silver, Silver to Gold).
Touch It won the first two games, 25-19, 25-18, before Kee Yah won the third, 30-28. Carrine served up an ace for the final point in both of Touch It's victories.

Les and Cindy's new addition
There's a new PowerZone member on the horizon, as regulars Les and Cindy Sturt have a new addition to their family.
Duncan Leslie George Sturt was born on July 16, weighing in at 7 pounds, 15 ounces.
Les was playing in the Parsippany Grass Tournament on July 15, with Cindy spectating, when she felt it was time to head for the hospital. Les, who was playing in the reverse coed doubles with Ann-Lee Yuan, had to leave without playing their last pool play match that day, but Cindy's feelings were right since she spent the night in the hospital and gave birth the following morning.
Cindy said all three Sturts are doing well. "I came home two days later, and Les is home on paternity leave. My mom moved in today (Monday) to give us a break,'' Cindy said.
Cindy said they choose the name Duncan because "it's Scottish-sounding and unique. We debated it a lot because we aren't sure if he'll get bullied because of it, but we wanted something different.''
The first middle name came from Les' dad, and George is after Les' uncle. But he joked to PowerZone director George Mon that the baby was named after him because George was the last person he and Cindy saw at Volunteers Park before they left for the hospital.
Duncan Leslie George Sturt is 20 inches long, Cindy said. "He's a good size,'' she said. "We still haven't decided if my Asian genes or Les' Scottish genes won.''
Either way, he'll probably be a great volleyball player!
